Full Description

PRN 30504 CHERRY HOLT MOATED SITE WAS A SCHEDULED ANCIENT MONUMENT BUT IS NOW DESTROYED. THE SITE WAS EXCAVATED IN 1953 PRIOR TO BEING LEVELLED AND THE FINDS ARE IN GRANTHAM MUSEUM. THE MOAT WAS ABOUT 40 TO 50 FT BROAD AND ABOUT 4 TO 5 FT DEEP WITH A BAULK IN THE CENTRE OF THE S SIDE. SITE TRENCHED N-S BUT NO FOUNDATIONS WERE DISCOVERED. FINDS INCLUDED CLAY PIPES, COMBED WARE AND NOTTINGHAMSHIRE STONEWARE POTTERY ALL OF 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY DATE.THE SITE HAS NOW BEEN DEVELOPED. IT IS SUGGESTED BY THE EXCAVATOR THAT THE SITE MAY NOT BE A MOAT AT ALL, DUE TO THE LATE DATE OF ITS CONSTRUCTION AS EVIDENCED BY THE STRATIFIED POST MEDIEVAL POTTERY AND CLAY PIPE FINDS. ITS ACTUAL FUNCTION REMAINS UNCLEAR, ALTHOUGH IT MAY POSSIBLY BE RELATED TO DAIRY PRACTICES. {1}{2}{3}
