Base probably 13th century, upper part 15th century. In 1886 an obelisk was erected in its place. This was removed 1910 and the old cross restored and re-erected.{1}{2}

'In medieval times the market was held in front of St. Wulfram's around a stone cross called the apple cross. Later the centre of the town moved... '{6}
