Full Description
The Grange was an early post-medieval house, thought to have been built shortly after the Dissolution, on the west side of the Market Place, and either on or near the site of the former Franciscan Priory of Grantham. It was the residence of the Bury family, with Sir William Bury representing the Borough of Grantham in the Parliament of 1654. Several of the Bury family are buried in Grantham church.
The house was acquired by the Fisher family, with Francis Fisher serving as the MP for Grantham between 1722 to 1727. Francis lived at the Grange with his father Robert during his time as MP.
The house was subsequently purchased by Lord William Manners, second son of John Duke of Rutland. Lord Manners rebuilt the house, and lived here until his death in 1772. It was then bequethed to John Manners, Esq. who also resided in the house. The building was reported in 1806 as having been 'lately taken down' by John Manners' son, Sir William Manners. {1}{2}{3}
