Full Description

A second icehouse was built in 1829, in the plantation to the north-east of Belton House, close to the earlier icehouse structure (see MLI30444). This later icehouse was not of the usual shape, but was instead a rectangular brick-built structure. By the mid 1980s, the structure was standing to wall height, though the vault or roof had collapsed into the interior. The remains of the mound which formerly covered the structure could be seen. The ice house measured 7.4m by 5.2m internally, with the remaining walls standing to a maximum height of about 1.9m. A drain in the floor was still present, as were fixing bolts noticed on the central buttress. {1}
