Full Description

An 18th century brick icehouse is located in the mound behind the garden temple. It has a shallow brick dome, with the entrance on the north side. The entrance feature (if there was one) has gone, as has the entrance passage, though indications of its position still survive. Documentary sources indicate that the Canal Pond was altered in 1771, in preparation for the icehouse which was built the following year. The icehouse was built of brick, to the standard design of a deep pit beneath the floor to ensure good drainage, and with a domed roof crowned with lead. The vault appears to be cracked inside, and the well is partly choked with rubble. The sturcture is set high up on an artificial mound. {1} Former icehouse built in 1772, located to the north-east of Belton House. The structure was built within an earth mound measuring approximately 5m high, with a brick-lined tunnel entrance to the north. A wooden door was added to block the entrance c.1991. {2}{3}
