Full Description

Finds at the pit during quarrying have included a Romano-British settlement and cemetery. In 1954 Romano-British inhumations were revealed by stripping off the topsoil. Finds occurred over a period of years. Excavation only took place in the area of well. The finds are at Lincoln, Grantham and Nottingham Museums. For further details of this site see the OS card (SK 94 SE:12). {1}{2}{3}{4}{7} In 1947 foundations and ditches were revealed in the sandpit and were well excavated. They contained second to third century pottery. Also in the vicinity, a bronze bracelet and third to fourth century pottery were also found. {7} During a watching brief on a pipeline along Willoughby Road in 1999 a number of sherds of Roman pottery were found at SK 9777 4351 dating to the third and fourth century as well as some Roman tile fragments. The finds were recovered from a buried topsoil beside the road and probably relate to this occupation site. {5}{6}
