Full Description

Two complexes of Romano-British building foundations were revealed during the removal of topsoil at Castle Lime Company Quarry. The foundations were planned but not excavated. The first complex comprised a basilican type building, of probable 3rd or 4th century date. The building was aligned east to west and was approximately 24ft wide, with 70ft of the length within the exposed part of the quarry (the western end was not examined). The outside wall was of 2ft thick re-used stone. The northern wall was interrupted by a major feature, possibly a corn drier. The building had possible north and south aisles. The second complex of foundations could not be identified. It was situated further up the slope, towards an area of Iron Age remains. {1}{2}{3}{4}
