Full Description

PRN 30223 Parish Church constructed in the 12th century with subsequent 13th, 14th and 15th additions. The Chancel was rebuilt in 1838 and further restoration work, particularly to the north aisle roof, was undertaken in 1875. Constructed in coursed ironstone rubble, Ancaster stone ashlar, blue lias and red brick, with lead and slate roofs. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.{1} Norman to Perpendicular with good 14th century tower, largely restored in 1875. Rebuilt 1830. Pulpit Jacobean.{2}{3} Stained glass in this church dates to the 14th century.{4} Tree-ring analysis was undertaken on 24 core samples obtained from different timbers in the nave and south aisle roofs of the Church of All Saints, Fenton. A further six sliced samples were obtained from oak boards covering the nave roof. The analysis of these 30 samples produced a single site chronology which was dated as spanning the years AD 1434 to AD 1617. Unfortunately, given that the samples are from boards which have been heavily trimmed to fit close together, there is no sap wood on any of the dated samples. Therefore, it was not possible to calculate a felling date for the timbers represented. It is unlikely, however, that the timbers were felled before AD 1632. This date fits well with mid-seventeenth century work on the south aisle roof denoted by one of the main rafters here inscribed with the date '1652'.{1}
