Full Description

Thorpe Parva is a lost hamlet in Westborough parish. Westborough with Thorpe is mentioned in the early 14th century. Site is not known. {1}{2}{3} The Enclosure Award map of 1771 for Westborough and Dry Doddington is in the Public Record Office at Kew, London. This has been seen by Di Ablewhite who has researched this area. The map shows both a Thorpes Footway, running west from Westborough, and a Thorpes Road, amid a group of small enclosures at SK 8410 4487. These small enclosures appear to be pre-enclosure closes and, together with the place-name evidence of the trackways, would appear to mark the site of Thorpe Parva. In addition, vertical aerial photographs taken by the RAF in 1946 show ridge and furrow in the surrounding fields and some amorphous marks, but no ridge and furrow, amongst the small enclosures. These marks are, however, unclear and cannot be certainly interpreted as archaeological remains. {4}{5}
