Full Description

From the size and variety of finds from this site it can be suggested that it was a major settlement rather than an individual villa or homestead. It lies north of the present village on the line of a road which may very well have been a continuation of the romanised line of Sewstern Lane, though running parallel and to the east of the line so named on Ordnance Survey Maps. Finds were first noted by C W Phillips, but, more recently, fieldwork by Mr J Dable suggests that the site extends over six to eight acres on either side of the road known as Fallows Lane, and is defined by a rectangular ditch system. {1}{2}{3}{4} Some of the finds have been brought in for identification at County Council Museum. There are four possible fire bars from a possible kiln, and a Romano-British brooch. {5} Material from this site includes stone, tile, bone, fibula, and loomweights. {6} A large surface collection from this site by Mr J. Dable (1965) includes Samian, gritted, grey and colour-coated wares. There are also mortaria pieces in a cream fabric, box tile fragments and iron and bronze fragments.
