Full Description

PRN 30099 Fragments of Anglo-Saxon interlace carving in exterior south wall of church. {1} Exterior south wall of the chancel has a length of Anglo-Saxon stonework, probably the shaft of a cross. Barrowby had church at time of Domesday Book. {2} Re-used in the south chancel wall is a section from a cross shaft decorated with interlace, late 10th or 11th century. {3} This stone fragment has since been identified as part of an Anglo-Saxon grave cover, dating from the mid-10th to early 11th century and located in the south chancel wall exterior. The visible part is the upper part of one of the decorated side panels, depicting an unornamented equal-armed cross and a run of interlace beneath a cable-moulded border. The interlace is a series of simple E knots with a 'bull's head' in the centre, suggesting that the cover belongs to the mid-Kesteven group of covers. A further slab of carved stone, used as the interior lintel of the west window of the south aisle (SK8785 3648), was previously identified as an Anglo-Saxon cross shaft. This has since been refuted by Everson and Stocker. See PRN 33009.{4}
