Full Description

The remains of a deserted medieval village were revealed and destroyed by surface ironworkings at different times since 1882. Along strip of land about 1 mile long and quarter to half mile wide on either side of Sewstern Lane, where it divides Woolsthorpe and Denton. "Two wall closes" marked a dry-walled enclosure called Tunstall (?Town site) in the 14th century, the way to it was Dunstalgate. In and around the walled space were two acres of metalling and extensive foundations. There are no surface indications of this settlement. The whole area is now under cultivation. The names 'Tunstall' and 'Dunstalgate' are not known locally and the 'dry walled enclosure' could not be located. 'Brewers Grave' is a roadside copse. Grantham and Nottingham Museums hold collections from the 'iron stone workings' Sewstern Lane, but they are not on show and are only partly classified.{1}
