Full Description

Site of the medieval St Martin's Chapel at Scottlethorpe. The chapel was used as a barn for many years before its demolition in 1964. The building stood within a stone-walled stackyard, with the field next to it being known as St Martin's Close. Mention of a chapel at Scotelthorpe was made in a documentary source of 1758. There was a strong local tradition of a monastery being located here, and amorphous disturbances around the stackyard may indicate more extensive buildings were present. Minor earthworks in the pasture to the east were thought to be remains of medieval field banks. The building had a 12th century blocked Norman doorway with plain tympanum in situ with surrounding masonry, although Pevsner believed this doorway to have been from the nearby Vaudey Abbey (see PRN 33650), rather than being original. The site had been designated as a scheduled ancient monument, but was de-scheduled following its demolition. The Norman doorway was saved by the Ministry of Works during the demolition, and was re-erected inside the church at Edenham (see PRN 33665). {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} {6}{7}{8}{9}{10}{11}{12}
