A cropmark site on the gravel terraces of the river Welland, this oval enclosure is surrounded by a pair of concentric lines of interrupted ditches. Some segments of the ditch have a ‘chain link’ or ‘string of sausages’ appearance likely to be because longer sections were formed by the amalgamation of shorter ditches. The egg shape of the enclosure is thought to be deliberate, possibly to emphasise the entrance or to distinguish one end from the other.{8} It is, therefore, most likely to represent a 'causewayed camp' of Neolithic date, and is one of the most important early settlements represented on these gravel terraces. The site is just above the potential high water mark of the time, probably to avoid flooding. The site's closeness to the confluence of the stream with the river suggests that it was related to the river system, which is thought to have been used for trade and communication. The enclosure is also situated slightly to the west of cropmarks which are thought to represent an earlier route of the present road, again suggesting its importance. The enclosure shares a similar plan, shape and location to the Uffington causewayed camp (PRN30050) and four others in a 5km radius. This is possibly due to groups using different enclosures for different seasons, or because they belonged to separate groups or subdivisions, or these enclosures may be due to groups abandoning old territories and moving on.{8} A light gravely soil; a barley crop has been harvested but no archaeological features are visible.
