Monument record MLI30050 - Neolithic Causewayed Camp

Neolithic Causewayed Camp

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

Faint cropmarks recorded once only (11 July 1962) suggest the presence at this site of a double-ditched causewayed camp. The site lies on the gravel terraces on the river Welland and only the northern portion can be traced from aerial cover. The camp may, with reasonable probability, be assumed to have been oval shaped due to the better recorded one nearby at Barholm (TF090103) (PRN 30052). The camp, with its concentric lines of interrupted ditches is likely to be of Neolithic date. It is a scheduled ancient monument. {1}{2} The egg shape of the enclosure is thought to have been to emphasise the entrance or to distinguish one end from the other. This enclosure is in a valley-side location, so is tilted to overlook the low-lying ground in the valley. However, it avoids the higher upland nearby, and overlooks the valley rather than the more extensive low-lying ground outside of the valley, though it is unclear why. {5}
