Full Description
The old manor house was mainly Tudor and Jacobean. The older portions were pulled down in 1837. The late 16th century gateway, 150 yards south-south-east of the church, remains. The Ordnance Survey 1824 map shows the moat complete except for a building, presumably the manor house, occupying the north-east corner at SK 8834 3241.{1}{2}{3}
In 1939, the present owner cleared the ruins and built a new house on the foundations using the old stone. The rest of the foundations were incorporated into garden landscaping or used as footings for outbuildings except for one stretch of old wall (containing an original window) which remains and blocks off the north end of the moat. {4}
The surviving gateway and boundary wall of the old manor house are listed as a single listed building (PRN37969). {5}
During a watching brief at 11 Pond Street, a deposit consisting of a number of layers including dumped material, organic clay, cess-rich material and former topsoils was seen and it is thought that this material may represent backfill of the eastern arm of the moat. An undated stone culvert which may have drained into the moat was also seen. {6}{7}
