Full Description

A former windmill is depicted in this location to the north-east of Quadring, on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It is named as 'Judycross Mill' and labelled as a corn mill. The exact date of the mill is uncertain, and it is unclear whether this was a post or tower mill, thoug hthe position of the circular mill is clearly marked. The map also labels an engine house immediately adjacent to the mill, suggesting that wind power on the site had been supplemented (if not entirely replaced) by engine power by the time of publication of this map in 1888. {1} The mill is still present and named on historic OS map editions of the mid 20th century, but seems to have been demolished by about 1960. A house located on the opposite side of Water Gate road is known as 'Mill House' on modern OS mapping, and may have served as the former miller's house. {2}{3}
