ROMAN FIELD SYSTEM

Full Description

PRN 23613 POSSIBLE UNDATED CROPMARK LINEAR FEATURES, MAY BE A FIELD SYSTEM. {1} DURING A WATCHING BRIEF ON IMPROVEMENTS TO PENNYGATE DRAIN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS OF UNDATED DITCHES AND SMALLER GULLIES WERE SEEN. TWO DITCHES CONTAINED LARGE QUANTITIES OF ROMAN POTTERY, ANIMAL BONE AND SLAG THUS SUGGESTING A SETTLEMENT NEARBY (SEE 23623). FROM THIS WORK IT IS HIGHLY PROBABLE THAT THE REMAINS OF ROMANO-BRITISH SETTLEMENTS AND FIELD SYSTEMS ARE MUCH MORE WIDESPREAD THAN WAS PREVIUOSLY RECOGNISED IN THIS AREA. THERE IS A STRONG SUGGESTION THAT THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL ROMANO-BRITISH FIELD SYSTEM AND SETTLEMENT COMPLEX HERE. {2}{3}
