Full Description
The station was built in 1867 by the Great Northern Railway, and was a standard design. The station was closed to passengers on the 11 September 1961, and to goods on 5 October 1964. The line was closed in 1982 and the rails removed. A new house was built over the trackbed at the north end of the platforms. The site consists of platforms, station house and offices, a signal box (built in about 1880) survives with the lever frame still intact inside; there is also a goods shed and crossing cottage. {1}
There was also a level crossing with a crossing keeper's cottage. {2}{3}
The signal box at Cowbit has typical 19th century railway architectural features throughout. It is situated immediately adjacent to the station and appears to be of the same construction and style. The signal levers and their frame are of a widely used type and are difficult to date accurately. The mechanism is fairly complete and probably contemporary with the signal box. The signal box is similar to several others including those at Deeping St James and Heckington. It is currently in a neglected condition. It is a two storey construction with a brick lower floor and a half-brick, half-timber upper floor. The brickwork is in Flemish bond. The Welsh slate roof appears to be in good condition, with inter-locking blue ridge tiles present. There is a single galvanised steel chimney flue which protrudes through the roof on the eastern side. {4}{5}
