Full Description
Romano-British pottery, including Grey Ware, Samian and mortaria sherds, were found south of Bourne, east of Spalding. {1}
Pottery and cropmarks were found at this location. {2}{3}
Further cropmarks were noted, centred on approximately TF 2275 2165, during an aerial photography assessment. {4}
A small, ditched enclosure was identified in Autumn 2011, during a magnetometry survey, conducted along the line of the proposed Western Relief Road, Spalding. The enclosure was roughly square shaped, with a number of internal divisions, and measured approximately 20m across. It was associated with a strongly enhanced magnetic anomaly, thought to represent the remains of an Iron Age or Romano-British saltern. {5}
Subsequent field walking, conducted in October 2011, identified a small concentration of Roman pottery in the same location as the geophysical anomaly previously identified. The recovered assemblage comprised four sherds of definite Roman date and a fragmentary piece of earthenware brick or tile, of unknown though possible Roman date. One of the sherds that could be securely dated was a fragment of Nene Valley grey ware. {6}{7}
