Full Description

SETTLEMENT EVIDENCE FROM POTTERY AND ANIMAL BONES FOUND ON A DARK SOIL MARK ON E FLANK OF A SILTY RODDON. {1}, AREA 0.1H, HTM 3M During excavation a slot forming two sides of a probable early Roman domestic building was revealed. The other two sides must have been less substantial, perhaps wattle screens that have left no trace. This could suggest that this was an out building or workshop rather than dwelling. This structure lay within a rectangular ditched enclosure from which Samian and Terra Nigra pottery was recovered suggesting a site of higher economic affluence than usual found in the fenland during this period. Slightly south of the outbuilding adjacent to a palaeochannel a concentration of 2nd to 3rd century features were recorded including a series of ditches and pits. A large quantity of pottery, from 29 different vessels, dating from 1st to early 3rd centuries was recovered from the ditches and palaeolchannel. Environmental sampling contained burnt rushes and sedge which could have been roofing or flooring materials and heath waste. A bone awl and a bronze brooch were also found as were pieces of fired clay with salt beachuing which could indicate salt making. This site was probably a small farmstead located by the palaeochannel, raising livestock and some salt making. There were two stock enclosures and some small post built timber structures with a oven or kiln that may have been used in salt production.{2}{3} During a watching brief undertaken after the excavations furthr briquetage was recorded. {2}{3}
