Full Description
THIS IS ONE OF THREE MAJOR IRON AGE SALTERN GROUPS WHICH PRODUCED BRIQUETAGE AND DOMESTIC POTTERY OF RECOGNISED MIDDLE IRON AGE STYLE. THE SPREADS OF BRIQUETAGE WERE GENERALLY C.30M IN DIAMETER, AND A NUMBER OF THESE WERE SLIGHTLY MOUNDED. AT TF 26471623 - POTTERY, 12 ANIMAL BONES , AN IRON NAIL AND SMALL FRAGMENTS OF BURNT STONE WITH BRIQUETAGE FOUND IN HUMOSE SOILS ON THE SOUTHERN FLANK OF THE PREHISTORIC RIVER WELLAND. AT TF 25601768 - A SMALL SITE CENTRED AROUND TRACES OF AN APPARENT HEARTH, WITH MUCH BRIQUETAGE AND BALCK SOIL IN AN AREA C.5M IN DIAMETER. AT TF 25561752 - THIS SITE APPEARS TO REMAINS REASONABLY INTACT UNDER PEATY ALLUVIUM THOUGH BLACK LAYERS CONTAINING ABUNDANT CHARCOAL HAD BEEN PLOUGHED OUT FROM THIS SITE PRIOR TO SURVEY. AMONG POTTERY WITHIN THESE PLOUGHED-OUT LAYERS WERE TWO RIM SHERDS RESEMBLING EARLY IRON AGE CERAMIC TYPES, AND ALSO DECORATED BODY SHERDS IN KEEPING WITH MIDDLE IRON AGE DATE. AT TF 25561752 (COW 31) - A SPARSE SCATTER ON A SILTY AREA ADJACENT TO A PEATY CHANNEL C.3M WIDE. OCCASIONAL PATCHES OF BLACK SOIL WITH PEAT AND CHARCOAL. SITE STILL LARELY BURIED. POTTERY IS LARGELY UNFAMILIAR ALTHOUGH SOME SUGGESTS A VERY EARLY IRON AGE DATE. SOME IS MIDDLE IRON AGE. {1}, AREA 0.15H, HTM 3M
