Full Description

Cowbit village developed during the 13th century along the new Fendyke. Medieval pottery was found on a high silty area north of Stonegate and the medieval fen bank, this site extends into the area of the bungalow to the south-west (PRN 23106a - TF 263 180). Sherds of pottery from the 12th and 13th centuries onwards, including material from kilns at Bourne, Toynton and Nottingham have been found. {1} A scatter of 11th to 15th century pottery was recovered during field walking, suggesting that the origins of the settlement of Cowbit were earlier than originally thought (PRN 23106b - TF 264 178). {2}{3} An undated pit and two ditches, one of which was a former field boundary, were revealed in March 2011, during the archaeological monitoring of groundworks for a new property near 18 Stonegate, Cowbit (PRN 23106c - TF 2606 1805). Medieval and post-medieval pottery was found within the topsoil. {4}{5} A sub-circular feature containing ceramic building material and 16th to 18th century brick, two features containing 16th to 18th century brick and a feature with a post-medieval nail were revealed in 2009, during a watching brief at Highgate House, Backgate, Cowbit (PRN 23106d - TF 2656 1722). {6}{7} A number of medieval and post-medieval ditches, most likely associated with land division, were recorded during archaeological trial excavation at Backgate (PRN 23103e - TF 2650 1785). Mainly unstratified pottery, dating from 1550 -1800, was found. {8}{9}
