Full Description
A medieval manor at Donington Wykes is known to have existed from documentary sources dating from the mid 16th century. The manor is thought to have been located in this area to the east of Donington village. What are now a series of ponds and ditches located in this area have been thought to have originally formed part of an encircling moat of the original manor site. The documentary sources state that a free manorial chapel was founded on the site during the reign of Richard I (1189-1199 AD), which would suggest that the manor was already well established by that point. The medieval manor house and chapel were probably stone-built structures, whereas other buildings on the site were likely of timber and earth. By 1280, the manor was in the ownership of the Earl of Richmond: a survey of this date is concerned primarily with the economic aspects of the farm but it shows a flourishing estate here. The former chapel is recorded as still standing as late as 1526, when Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, is recorded as its patron.
The present house of Wykes Manor dates from the early 17th century (see MLI94620). It is located to the south of the suspected medieval manorial site, and is thought to be a replacement for the earlier manor house. {1}{2}{3}{4}
A resistivity survey was conducted on the suspected moated manorial site in July 1988, as part of a private research project. The survey found a number of significant geophysical anomalies, thought to represent the foundations and remains of former structures and boundaries. Whilst the exact date of these features could not be determined, an association with the probable manorial site was thought to be likely. {5}
