Full Description

Former saltern mounds to the east of Red House Farm, Donington, depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. {1} Two former mounds were noted under young crop during a site visit conducted in 1965. Despite some damage by ploughing, the mounds survived to a maximum height of 3m at that time, though the slopes were much spread. {2}{3} These salterns may form one of the many salt pan sites mentioned in Domesday for Donington parish. Their exact date remains uncertain, however, and an earlier origin may equally be possible. {4}
