Full Description

Nothing was found during the recording of the history of the site. Aerial photographs show further rectangular enclosures within the outer moat, quite distinct from, and later than the traces of other relief or cropmarks which extend widely over the whole area and are reminiscent of the Roman settlement sites to the west see TF12NE 1-5. It is an extensive manorial site comprising basically an inner and outer moat. Local research failed to locate any literary references. Published survey (25 inch) revised. At TF195270 is the site of New Hall, a grange of Spalding Priory, built by Prior William of Littleport (1274-94). Also New Place. A first reference in 1229-53 for a 'grant of 1 acre 2 perches of land of offoldfal in Toledyke in 1229-53 describes it butting east on a small drove going through the portas novi loci as far as Humelochrine and west on the marsh-dyke going towards Donuehirne. {8}{4}{5}{6}{7} It is located alongside the medieval Newdyke, now known as Beck Bank, on marine silts which were probably taken in from the fen in the early 12th century. The moated site is sub-rectangular in plan and has maximum overall dimensions of approximately 300m eeast to west by 293m north to south. A rhomboidal central island with internal dimensions of approximately 155m eeast to west by 93m north to south is surrounded by an inner and outer moat, spaced between 23m and 80m apart, with a number of ditched enclosures between. Excluded from the scheduling are all field boundary fences and gates within the area, as are derelict farm buildings on the southern edge of the site, and a water trough, with concrete standing and supply pipe, although the ground beneath all these features is included. There is a full description in the scheduling document 20818. {8}
