Full Description

Site of Halmer Grange, a grange of Spalding Priory. First reference 1253-74. Accounts of the Grange have not survived although there is a survey providing much information which dates some time after 1294.{1}{2}{3} In 1959, field walking on ground levelled for new playing field at Spalding High School to be built on above site. Medieval and post medieval pottery e.g. slipware, Cistercian and also Bourne D. In 1975, during construction of a new laboratory, excavation for foundations at southern corner of main buildings only revealed great depth of clean silt layers down to about 3 ft. {2} THE PRESENT PROPERTY KNOWN AS THE GRANGE HAS TAKEN ITS NAME FROM THE MONASTIC GRANGE WHICH USED TO STAND FURTHER SOUTH BENEATH SPALDING HIGH SCHOOL. MEDIEVAL POTTERY WAS FOUND DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLAYING FIELDS TO THE EAST OF THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS. {4}
