Full Description

At TF26032263, TF26042266, TF26062269 in July 1951 the boys of Spalding Grammar School discovered three Roman domestic sites. They were exposed in cutting the River Welland deviation, on a clay surface at 5ft OD, and under 5ft of later estuarine to marine silt, and each site consisted of a layer of occupation debris 6 ins thick and 10 ft long containing charcoal, bones, c100-300AD pottery, and pollen. At A - TF26052266 a few lumps of glazed slag and two pieces wedge-shaped 'end' suggest a possible kiln but no wasters were found. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} Indicated sites are now within the New Welland Cut.{1}
