Full Description

PRN 22362 'Prior's Oven' - octagonal room with vaulted wooden ceiling - medieval but of uncertain date. Possibly a turret. Recent uses include a coffee shop and a bakery. {1} Small building of brick and stone, appears to be about 1230 in date. It has an almost entirely 19th century exterior appearance except for the rounded shape. The interior consists of a single vaulted room with eight concentric arches with chamfered wood beams. The building in the 19th century served as a blacksmith but was formerly part of the priory, and it said to have been a lock up for the monks. The present name 'Prior's Oven' is derived from the shape and has no bearing on its former use. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The building was used as a blacksmiths in the 1840s. {3} The Prior's Oven in the Sheep Market is one of the few remaining portions of the former Benedictine Abbey. It formed the ground floor of the north west angled turret of the Abbey Precincts. It was used as a prision and over it was erected the gallows but it is now a shop. {4}{5} It has, since 2014, been used as a micropub (the first in Lincolnshire). {6}
