Full Description

A Roman settlement site exposed in section in July 1953 during drain widening from TF38581912-TF38731889. The site was visited in 1953 by S. J. Hallam and J. Mossop. The old ground surface was overlain with later silt, and the Romano-British ditches, contained domestic debris, including late 2nd century AD pottery. Aerial photographs show cropmarks or soil discolouration indicating fields, roddons, and possibly enclosures.{1}{2}{3} The area is under crop (1965). There is no surface evidence of occupation. Mr Mossop holds some material from the area but could not specifically separate it from his general collection.{1} The pottery is late 1st to early 2nd century. There was not much early 3rd century pottery but some late 3rd to 4th century. {3}
