Full Description

This site was ploughed in 1951, when the ditch lines were plain, with great variation in soil and relief and occupation areas sharply defined. Clayey with raised silty area in the north of the field, subdivided by deep peaty hollows. One holllow was square, fifty feet across, with loose baked clay and ash powder, scattered with fragments of baked clay cross-bars, trench lining and vessel pieces; sherds were scattered along the north edge and down into a peaty ditch dividing it from a spread of sherds, bone and quern fragments along the south flank of the hillock. Abundant sherd concentrations were noted in a small patch of dark soil to the northeast, including tile. A small sharply defined rectangle of very dark soil was also noted. Sparse sherd scatters were encountered to the west; these were predominantly late 2nd century in date, continuing into the 3rd century. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
