Full Description
Roman coins and pottery found in and near Aswick Grange were recorded by Stukeley in 1724. Stukeley also reports that in 1758, he bought a number of coins, including some of Augustus, Tiberius, Otho and Carausius, which had been found in a pot at Aswick. {1}{2}{3}
'1 June, 1758. I bought a good many Roman coyns found in a pot at Aswic, near Crowland, some silver, Augustus, Tiberius, a brass Otho, two Carausius, others of all times of the Empire.' {4}
In 1961, W.S. White of Whaplode School reported sherds of Roman pottery and flue tile, found in the area of the moat. The pottery comprised sherds of greyware, and included two almost complete jars. The whole of this area is one of intensive Roman occupation, and the reports of the earlier finds led to the medieval moat being erroneously published on the Ordnance Survey 6" map of 1906 as a Roman Camp. {5}{6}
Further sherds of Roman pottery and possible hearths were reported in 1965, during ditch widening in this area. It was thought possible that the Roman remains which have been found in this area were outliers from the large site at Whaplode Drove, a quarter of a mile to the east. {7}
The remains of a single east to west aligned ditch was recorded in July 2000, during archaeological monitoring at Aswick Grange. A small assemblage of Romano-British pottery was recovered from the fill of this ditch, comprising a piece of Nene Valley Grey ware pottery, a sherd of fine quality imported Rhenish-style ware, and a fragment from a lower quality ware of likely local origin. {8}{9}
