Full Description

The house of Crutched friars of St Mary 'de novo loco', which lay between Saturday Dyke and Hassock Dyke, Whaplode, was founded in 1246-47. The site was abandoned by the Crutched Friars in 1260, and between 1260-69, it was granted to the Priory of Spalding. Saturday Dyke, now Little South Holland Drain, extends through the parish of Whaplode from TF310193 to TF341200, and Hassock Dyke from TF310175 to TF 334180.{1}{2}{3}{4} In 1997 Hilary Healey, following discussions with the landowner, identified a scatter of 13th and 14th century medieval pottery together with seashell, animal bone and small pieces of limestone at TF32381874. In the past during deep drainage works large stone blocks had been found here according to the owner. This site is in the correct position to be the friary referred to in the sources above. {6}
