The possible location of a Romano British settlement or area of saltmaking was identified at this location from cropmarks of ditched enclosures, roads, and water-courses, and domestic debris and pottery finds.

Full Description

Rectangular ditched enclosures, roads, and water-courses were visible as cropmark and soilmarks on aerial photographs at Moulton East Fen, which was surveyed in January 1951 and April 1952. Domestic debris, 2nd to 3rd century pottery, quern fragments, bones, teeth and shells were found over areas of soil dis-colouration at A - (TF30151477) and B - (TF30211468). At C - (TF29821481) an area of soft red earth about 60 feet by 100 feet was full of burnt material and baked clay fragments, but contained no domestic refuse. {1}{2}{3}{4} The area was under crop in 1965 and there was no surface evidence of occupation. {1} Scatters of domestic debris and dark soils were found in 1950-1 along 700 feet of the west edge of an area of raised silt. Half of the pottery found was grey ware. There was also a flagon rim dating from c.300AD. {5}{6}
