Full Description
A compact group of small enclosures, some rectilinear in shape, were examined in April 1952. A wide network of straight drainage ditches were located to the north and there was irregular drainage to the west and south. The enclosures are possibly fields associated with Roman domestic sites. {1}{6}{7}
The major portions of the indicated areas are under crop and there was no visual evidence of occupation. Perambulation revealed one sherd of Romano British pottery. The majority of the finds are in the City and County Museum, Lincoln. {1}
A watching brief was carried out during works on the Moulton Chapel to Whaplode water mains. This part of the watching brief dealt with the section running along the Moulton Mere drain. In Field 1, in the north west of the cropmark site, two Roman ditches were identified. To the south of this, in Field 2, a pit and several ditches were identified, one containing articulated animal skeletal remains. Again, further south, in Field 4, east of Chapel Farm, several ditches were interpreted as the boundaries of separate field enclosures with access provided through the corner of each; a typical form a stock management system. To the south of this in Field 6 some ditches, including a droveway running north west to south east were recorded. {8}{9}
