Full Description

The Fleet Light Railway was a narrow gauge railway line, built about 1910 by the Worth family. It was variously quoted as having been 1ft 11 5/8", 1ft 11 3/4" and 2ft gauge. The railway served the Worth's farms to the north of Fleet Hargate, and linked them to Fleet Station on what was then part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. All the track and equipment was purchased new for the line, nothing was second-hand. By 1920 there were some 2.75 miles of track between Old White House Lodge and Fleet Station. By the early 1930s it reached its greatest extent, 12.9 miles, serving in addition White House Lodge, Manor House Farm, The Grange and Hurn Farm, as well as reaching into many of the fields. A great variety of produce was carried, including seed and maincrop potatoes, fertiliser, celery, beans, strawberries, sugar beet, pigs and coal for threshing machines at harvest. Shooting parties were also catered for. The line was usually trouble-free, due to the high standard of maintenance insisted upon by the Worth's. In common with the other farm railways, hard roadways began to replace the line during and after the Second World War, and by 1952 the route milage was down to 6 1/4 miles. The line running northwards alongside the Fleet Haven was removed after the Dawesmere system was closed in 1940. The end finally came in 1955 when the remnants were closed, and it was lifted the following year. Virtually no trace remains today. {1}{2}{3}
