Full Description

During a watching brief on a watermain from Moulton chapel to Whaplode a salvage excavation was carried out to record the remains of a previously unrecognised small rural settlement occupied during the second century AD to the third century. Agricultural gullies, pits and ditches were found, some of which contained burnt debris of a domestic and/or industrial nature. There was also much animal bone. One ditch served as the southern limit of a series of pits and gullies some of which had been repeatedly reused. This is a settlement boundary ditch. Some burnt clay fragments were found probably representing refuse from some sort of domestic/industrial activity located nearby. There was also one sherd of Dales ware shell tempered pottery, possibly dating from the 3rd century, which is very rare. {1}{2}
