Full Description

The Ellis Cross is marked on this location on the tithe map for Whaplode. The cross is thought to have functioned as a medieval boundary marker, or possibly marked the location of a former medieval chapel (though this interpretation is more specualtive). The name Ellis may be a reference to Conan Fitz Elias, a member of the minor gentry who held land at Whaplode in the later 12th century. {1}
