Full Description

Before 1830, the village of Sutton Bridge did not exist. The only buildings there, apart from the wash house, were scattered farmhouses and a few cottages built in the 1820's along the north side of the main road. After works were conducted to divert the River Nene into a new channel and to construct the first Cross Keys Bridge in 1830, Sutton Bridge began to develop. The focus of settlement was on the western side of the bridge, and extended further westwards as the village grew. The village had a small flourishing port for a short while (see PRN20487). {1}{2}{3} Features relating to the early development of Sutton Bridge as a settlement were recorded in May 2015, during archaeological monitoring of new development at 132 Bridge Road (PRN 20489a - TF 4767 2134). The features comprised the remains of several pits and ditches, from which fragments of late 17th to early 19th century pottery, glass, clay pipe and leather shoes were recovered. The features were sealed by layers of demolition debris, thought to derive from the replacement of a Wesleyan chapel on the site in 1836 (see PRN 25830). {4}{5}
