Full Description
ABOUT 50 ACRES OF LAND IN FLEET HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS BELONGING TO THE TEMPLARS FROM TITHE MAPS. TWO FIELDS KNOWN AS 'TEMPLE BOTTOMS' AND A THIRD UNNAMED FIELD ARE BORDERED ON THREE SIDES BY NARROW DITCHED STRIPS OF LAND WHICH APPEAR ON THE MAP TO BE GREEN LANES OR OLD PROTECTIVE BANKS. THIS, TOGETHER WITH A FOURTH STRIP OF LAND WERE KNOWN AS THE 'ROUNDABOUTS', NO DOUBT BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE LAND WAS ENCIRCLED. THEY ARE RECALLED AS RIDGES BETWEEN THE TWO DITHES, AND THEY REMAIN SLIGHTLY RAISED, SINCE ONLY THE INNER DITCH WAS FILLED IN WHEN THEY WERE PLOUGHED. THESE DOUBLE DITCHES APPEAR TO BE TYPICAL BOUNDARIES FOR TEMPLAR LAND. {2}
