Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

The medieval settlement of Pinchbeck is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was in the possession of Ivo Taillesbois and Guy of Craon. Referred to as both Picebech and Pincebec. At the time of Domesday there was a minimum population of 57 and four fisheries rendering 1500 eels. The name is probably derived from the old English and may mean 'minnow stream'. A watching brief at Herring Lane did not reveal any archaeology (see also PRN 23700). {1}{2}
