Full Description
AT THE DISSOLUTION SWINESHEAD ABBEY OWNED A MANOR IN GOSBERTON AT MONK'S HALL. {1}
THERE ARE FRAGMENTARY EARTHWORKS WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN PART OF THE MANOR, OR ASSOCIATED WITH THE LATER MANOR. IT WAS OWNED VARIOUSLY BY THE ABBEYS OF PETERBOROUGH AND SWINESHEAD. {2}
MONKS HALL IS SITUATED 1 KM TO THE NORTH WEST OF THE VILLAGE OF GOSBERTON AND IS SURROUNDED BY THE VESTIGES OF A MOAT ON THE NORTH, SOUTH AND EAST SIDES. THE EAST AND NORTH PARTS ARE LARGELY FILLED IN, AND THE SOUTH PART, NOW MADE INTO A POND, PERHAPS INDICATES THE ORIGINAL POSITION OF THE SOUTH WEST CORNER. THERE IS NO SIGN OF THE MOAT ON THE WEST. LITTLE IS KNOWN OF THE POST-CONQUEST HISTORY OF THE SITE AND ESTATE, BEYOND THE FACT THAT THEY BELONGED TO THE CELLARER OF THE ABBEY, FOR NO REGISTERS HAVE SURVIVIED TO ILLUSTRATE THEIR MANAGEMENT. {5}
