Full Description

Now incorporates deleted record 20455 A large group of ditched small enclosures inside a network of droves and large enclosures, seen on APs as crop and relief marks under plough at New Fen Drove Fleet; field surveyed in November 1951. Late second to early third century pottery was prolific in domestic debris over wide raised area with indefinite patches of dark soil at TF32311044 and TF32171039 on small definite hillock of dark soil. Large rotary quern fragments found, and lump of baked clay (from A) from otherwise domestic group. Riley lists two small circles, at TF32341038, which he considers were originally small barrows. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} Majority of indicated area is under crop with undulating surface and some ditches. An area of pasture, TF32021006, shows surviving earthworks; drove road, a line of building sites and rectangular, ditched fields. All are sharply profiled, with little evidence of silting or spreading, and consistent with a late medieval farmstead.{1} Large group of Roman fenland enclosures in very complex layout, including drove roads, steadings and, to the north some traces of industrial workings. North under crop, southern field under grass and unploughed. Banks of the drove road still exist some 0.6m high and associated steadings equally impressive. Pottery from the north part of site show an unusually high proportion of Samian and show occupation in late second to early third century. {7}
