Full Description
THIS FOUNDRY IS LISTED IN DIRECTORIES 1877 TO 1897 AS A BRASS AND IRON FOUNDRY OPERATED BY PETER YORKSTONE. IT IS A VERY SMALL SINGLE STOREY BUILDING IN WORKING CLASS RESIDENTIAL AREA. IT IS RED BRICK WITH A PANTILED ROOF. {1}
About 1880 some Scottish ironfounders came to Boston, one of whom, Peter Yorkstone, opened a small foundry in Blue Street backing onto the Ebenezer Chapel in Liquorpond Street. This foundry was opened between 1876 and 1882 and made the old type of kitchen grate with an oven one side, a boiler the other and top openings. It operated until after 1896, in which year Mr Yorkstone was living in Sydney Street. {2}
