Full Description
PRN 13507
THE GRANARY COMPLEX, LATER KNOWN AS THE CARLTON WORKS, WAS SITUATED IN SOUTH SQUARE.
THE EARLIEST BUILDINGS ON THE SITE DATED FROM PRE-1745; THESE BEING THE 'COOPERY' WAREHOUSE (DEMOLISHED C.1800) AND THE 'PARISH HOUSE' WHICH WAS A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING (DEMOLISHED 1845). THIS PART OF THE SITE WAS ORIGINALLY UNDER SEPARATE OWNERSHIP, BUT WAS LATER ADDED TO THE MAIN SITE. THE REST OF THE BUILDINGS DATE FROM THE LATE C18-EARLY C19, AND WERE BUILT BY ABRAHAM SHEATH WHO BOUGHT THE SITE IN 1782. THE MAIN SITE CONSISTED OF A GEORGIAN HOUSE WITH A WAREHOUSE TO THE SOUTH. LATER A TIMBER WAREHOUSE WAS BUILT AS A WESTERN EXTENSION, FINALLY ANOTHER GRANARY WAS BUILT ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE SITE, WITH A SINGLE STOREY COUNTING HOUSE IN FRONT. SHEATH WENT BANKRUPT IN 1814, AND THE SITE HAD A SUCCESSION OF OWNERS. THE HOUSE WAS DEMOLISHED C.1927, AND THE REST WERE DEMOLISHED IN 1964. {1}
In 1789 Abraham Sheath a timber merchant, ship and land owner set up Sheaths bank. The bank was set up with his son Challis Sheath and John Sheath who may also be his son. The location of the bank which went bankrupt in 1814, with a reported £500 000 worth of bank notes in circulation has been the subject of much debate. It has been purported that the actual location of the bank was on South Place. The site included a single storey office or 'counting house' which was situated in front of the South Place facade of the original granary. It was an elegant red brick structure with a well-proportioned front. A large central headed window in a bowed brick wall projecting forward slightly in front of the rest of the office with two smaller windows to the left and right. {2}
