Full Description

THE BOROUGH IRON WORKS WAS BUILT C.1850. THEY OCCUPIED A SMALL SITE BETWEEN 'WITHAM TOWN' AND RIVER WITHAM. THE BUILDINGS WERE IN USE IN 1966, BUT WERE DEMOLISHED C.1970. {1} By 1892 a new small foundry called the Borough Iron Works had been erected by John Peck and Son, engineers, boiler makers and tank and girder manufacturers, which lay about 30 yards south of the Grand Sluice Iron Works. In 1912 these works were occupied by John Hides Peck, who remained there until after 1937. In 1964-65 the buildings which remain are in a very dilapidated condition, one of which was in use as a boat shed. The yard was used as a junk yard. {2}
