Full Description

THE SITE ADJOINS THE MAUD FOSTER DRAIN AT THE END OF WIDE BARGATE. IT WAS AN L-SHAPED, TWO-STOREY BUILDING AROUND A YARD. THE WALL NEXT TO THE DRAIN USED OTHER COLOURED BRICKS AROUND THE WINDOWS FOR DECORATIVE DETAILS. THE CIGAR WORKS BUILT BY SMYTH AND CO., LATER THORNS AND CO. IT PRODUCED CIGARS UNTIL C.1920, LATER USED BY J AND J BEAULAH AS A CANNING FACTORY, AND WAS CLOSED PRE 1965. IT WAS DEMOLISHED, POSSIBLY SOMETIME DURING THE 1970'S. {1} THE CIGAR WORKS CONTINUED UNTIL 1928, THE BULK OF THE WORK FORCE BEING FEMALE. {2}
