Full Description

During the excavation of trial trenches off Butterwick Road a number of early medieval features were identified. These included a stepped feature and a gully that was interpreted as a palisade or fence ditch, a fire pit which was probably of domestic status as its contents contained charred cereal grains, a ditch and a feature said to be back filled soon after it was dug which contained part of a decorated bone comb dating from the late Saxon period. All the dating evidence from these features was late Saxon pottery sherds. {1}{2} A watching brief further west, adjacent to church road at TF 3758 4388 revealed undated features, which predated the 14th century features. The presence of late Saxon pottery on the site prompts the suggestion that these earlier features may be late Saxon in origin. {3}
