PRN 13360 DURING A WATCHING BRIEF AT 3 NEW STREET, A SUBSTANTIAL WALL WAS RECORDED. IT WAS ALIGNED NW-SE ALONG THE LINE OF THE C12 BAR DITCH TOWN DEFENCE. IN PLACES THE WALL SURVIVED TO A DEPTH OF 3M AND WAS TRACED FOR 4M; ITS WIDTH WAS GREATER THAN 70CM. IT WAS INITIALLY THOUGHT THAT THE WALL COULD BE PART OF THE TOWN WALL. A LATER INTERPRETATION IS THAT IT IS PART OF A HIGH STATUS BUILDING, POSSIBLY MONASTIC. A SMALL NUMBER OF POTTERY SHERDS DATING FROM THE MID C12 TO EARLY C13 WERE FOUND IN THE BASE OF THE CONTRACTORS TRENCH. {1}{2}
