Full Description

PRN 13323 DURING A WATCHING BRIEF OF LAND AT RED LION STREET DEPOSITS WERE OBSERVED, PROBABLY THE RESULT OF AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY, WHICH SEALED MEDIEVAL REMAINS. THREE PARALLEL DITCHES WERE RECORDED CUT INTO THIS SUBSOIL, POSSIBLY FOR DRAINAGE OR DEMARCATION OF LAND. ONE OF THE DITCHES CONTAINED 8 POT SHERDS, 7 GLASS BOTTLE FRAGMENTS, CATTLE BONE AND SHELLS DATING TO THE LATE C18-EARLY C19. THIS DITCH CUT AN EARLIER ONE. A SINGLE LINEAR PIT WAS UNCOVERED AT THE NORTH END OF THE DEVELOPMENT. THREE C18-C19 BRICK-LINED WELLS WERE FOUND, TWO OF WHICH WERE LOCATED AWAY FROM THE FOUNDATION TRENCHES, AND SO WERE NOT RECORDED. {1}{2} During a watching brief at TF 2255 3735 several pits and ditches were recorded all thought to be of agricultural use. Pottery of a post medieval date, 16th-18th century was recovered from these features, together with intrusive medieval sherds. {3}{4}
